Visiting Arkhangai

Earlier this month, we traveled west of UB about 500 km to Tsetserleg in Arkhangai province. On the way to and from, we stopped at Kharkhorin (the ancient capital of the Mongolian Empire) to visit the Erdene Zuu Monastery and temple complex (going) and the Khakhorin Museum (coming). While staying in Tsetserleg, we also visited the Taikhar Rock in Ikh Tamir soum. We met up with our teammates from the far western side of the country while there, and it was a great time to all be together and plan for the future. And now for the pictures!

If you happen to be in Mongolia and are in that neck of the woods, I recommend visiting Kharkhorin and taking in Erdene Zuu monastery and temple complex as it gives context to the Great Repression of the 1930s. The museum is also worth your while if you are interested in archaeology and ancient history. Finally, if you get all the way to Tsetserleg, I recommend staying at Fairfield Guesthouse, especially if you’re on a budget. Our stay was comfortable and at a good price, and the food they serve in the cafe is delicious!

Happy spring!

  1. About 30-40 km southeast of Tsetserleg, you can visit the hot springs, Бор Бургастайн Рашаан, with gers where you can stay. Nice relaxing place, but hard to find! b/r Donald
